Asian Wrestling Championships : Vinesh Phogat eyeing world number 1 ranking as reigning world champ likely to miss out

The  Asian Wrestling Championships  in Delhi will be star studded affair, especially in 53kg category. After World Silver medallist Mayu Mukaida’s confirmation now world number 4 Pang Qiyanu of China has also confirmed her participation in the Delhi edition.  Only top 4 players likely to skip the Asian championships will be world champion Yong Mi Pak of North Korea. This will give opportunity to the queen of Indian wrestling to create history by grabbing world number 1 ranking for the first time. The Queen of Indian wrestling Vinesh Phogat upset, questions the Padma Shri snub Wrestler  Vinesh Phogat  has questioned the selection system for the list of sportspersons who receive the Government awards every year after her name did not feature in the list, which was released on Saturday.  Phogat, who won bronze at the  2019 World Wrestling Championships , did not feature in the list of eight sportspersons who were awarded the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.  In the year 2019, Phogat won two bronze medals (Asian and World Wrestling Championships) and two gold in Yasar Dogu International and Poland Open wrestling tournament in Warsaw. “Every year our Government awards several sportspersons. Snow showers welcomes Deepak and Ravi on Russian training stint, Sushil Kumar to join the duo soon for the camp Ace Indian wrestlers Deepak Punia and Rome Ranking Series gold medallist Ravi Dahiya have reached Makhachkala in Russia for the 3 week training stint. As soon as the duo landed in Russia they were welcome by the snow showers and sub-zero temperatures. “It’s really cold here and tough conditions. But training in these conditions with the best of wrestlers will make us really tough”. Dahiya and Punia have already booked the berths for the Olympics Games in Tokyo this year. The duo will train under noted coach Murad Gaudrov at the three-week training camp in Russia. UWW Rankings : Greco-Roman wrestlers shine as Gurpreet, Sunil makes entry in top 10 of global rankings For the first time ever Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers are making their presence felt in the  UWW  ranking charts.  The world body of wrestling,  UWW  has released their latest list as the first ranking series tournament of 2020 concluded in Rome and Indian Greco wrestlers Gurpreet Singh and Sunil Kumar both have made entry in the top 10 rankings list. Greco-Roman wrestlers Gurpreet, Sunil biggest gainers No one will now tell them that the Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers are not up to the global standards. India’s Gurpreet won gold and Sunil Kumar won silver in Rome and that has catapulted them to top 10 in the UWW world rankings for the first time. After Ravi, Bajrang Punia also wins gold on final day of Rome Ranking Series, Indian team finishes with 7 medals The Indian champion Bajrang Punia was rusty, was short of match practice but still was good to win the finals of the Rome Ranking Series. In the finals Bajrang got better of American Jordan Oliver by 4-3 scoreline. Rome Ranking Series : Ravi Dhaiya reigns supreme in 61kg, wins another gold for India The fourth day of the  Rome Ranking Series  started on a bad note for India as 2019 world medallist  Deepak Punia  crashed out of the tournament in the opening round. But his good mate  Ravi Dhaiya  brought back smile on the Indian faces as he won all 3 bouts to win gold medal for India in 61kg category. This was India’s 3rd gold at the 2020  Rome Ranking Series .  Before Dhaiya, Vinesh Phogat and Gurpreet won yellow metal for India. Vinesh Phogat starts year 2020 with a bang, wins gold medal at Rome Ranking Series The wrestling queen of India  Vinesh Phogat  has won gold medal at the 2020 season’s first  Ranking Series  event in Rome. The final between Vinesh and  Luisa Elizabeth Valverde of Equador was completely one sided affair as Ecuadorian wrestler never looked posing any threat to Vinesh. Gurpreet wins historic Gold, India ends day 2 with 3 medals in the UWW Rome Ranking Series wrestling India’s  Gurpreet Singh  has created history by winning gold in the  UWW Rome Ranking Series  wrestling as he became first Indian to win  Ranking Series  level gold in Greco-Roman category.  Gurpreet  scored 8-5 victory over Burhan AKBUDAK of Turkey in the 82kg finals. It is worth noting that  Gurpreet  moved to 82kg non-olympic category at the very last minute of the competitions as his regular category in 77kg. India had some more to cheer from the Greco-Roman wrestling front as Sajan Bhanwal won bronze medal for the country in the 77kg. Sajan defeated Emrah Kus of Turkey by fall to win bronze.
