Vinesh Phogat starts year 2020 with a bang, wins gold medal at Rome Ranking Series

The wrestling queen of India Vinesh Phogat has won gold medal at the 2020 season’s first Ranking Series event in Rome. The final between Vinesh and Luisa Elizabeth Valverde of Equador was completely one sided affair as Ecuadorian wrestler never looked posing any threat to Vinesh. The champion from India won the bout 4-0 and secured India’s 2nd gold medal at the ongoing championships.

Earlier in the semi-finals India’s best bet for Tokyo 2020 was at her best as she defeated two time world medallist Qiyanu Pang of China 4-2.

Pang like Vinesh is a bronze medal winner in the 2019 world championships in Nur-Sultan. In the last 8 match, 2018 Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh defeated the Under 23 World Champion Lannuan Lu of China to make it to the last 4 of the Rome Ranking Series.

Phogat has been training in Kiev, Ukraine since past few weeks and looked supremely fit and agile as she scored 2 four pointers to outfox her young Chinese opponent. Vinesh won the bout 15-5.

The gold medal winning performance of Vinesh has taken India’s medal tally in Rome to 5. India has up till now won 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal at the UWW Ranking Series event in Rome.
