Indian wrestlers extremely disappointed with the postponement of the Asian Olympic Qualifiers

The Indian wrestlers are shocked with the deferment of the  Asian Olympic Qualifiers  due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.  A 14-member Indian contingent was scheduled to fly to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on March 24 to participate in the qualification tournament for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The qualifiers were scheduled from March 27 to 29.                                             The host governing body has decided to postpone the qualifiers as a step of precaution. The news has taken the Indian grapplers completely off-guard. The trials for 62kg and 76kg women’s wrestling are being conducted today at SAI Centre, Lucknow for India’s entry in the next month’s  Asian Olympic Qualifiers .  Sakshi , Sarita, Mansi and Sonam entered the semi-finals.  Pooja Dhanda and Navjot Kaur saw an early exit from the trials after loosing to Sarita and Mansi respectively.                                                          FULL RESULTS of the Trials: Women’s 62kg:  Qualifications: Mansi in semi-finals after beating Anita 6-0 in the quarter-finals. Sushil Kumar extends help to boxing legend to fight against cancer

Two-time Olympic medallist  Sushil Kumar  has extended a helping hand to boxing legend Dingko Singh in his fight against liver cancer. Kumar along with several other individuals have come forward to help the former boxer financially.  Dingko is suffering from lung cancer for which he had first been successfully treated three years ago. The 1998 Bangkok Asian Games gold medallist Dingko has been undergoing test at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi since January 28 and is struggling to raise funds for his treatment.                                                       Dingko’s financial woes and his struggle to raise funds for his cancer treatment moved double Olympic medallist  Sushil  so much that he decided to support the legendary boxing champ. Asian Wrestling Championships: Turkmenistan second team to opt out

Turkmenistan have become the second team to withdraw from the  Asian Wrestling Championship , New Delhi Wrestling Federation of India assistant secretary Vinod Tomar has confirmed the development. The WFI has received an email from the Turkmenistan authority regarding the pull-out. “Turkmenistan has withdrawn from the Asian meet,” Tomar said, adding, “The team will not participate in the Senior Asian Championships as their Government is not allowing the players to travel due to the Coronavirus threat.” There is no certainty over any replacement, if at all, for Turkmenistan. Ritu Phogat says she’s focussed on becoming mixed martial arts champion

Wrestler-turned-Mixed Martial Arts fighter  Ritu Phogat  on Wednesday said she might return to wrestling in future but currently she’s focussed on putting in the hard yards to achieve her dream of becoming India’s first MMA world champion. Ritu, who had bagged the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships gold and silver at the 2017 World Under-23 Championships, won her debut MMA fight at the One:  Age of Dragons event, beating South Korea’s Nam Hee Kim in under three minutes.                 The 25-year-old from Haryana, daughter of the legendary wrestling coach Mahavir Singh Phogat, will next feature in her second MMA bout on February 28 in Singapore. “I know I still have a long way to go, but I’m willing to continue to put the work in until I reach my ultimate goal.  My dream is to give India its first ever mixed martial arts world champion,” she said ahead of her face-off with China’s Pro MMA fighter Wu Chiao C...

The star-studded list of Monday-night semifinalists featured countless Olympic, world and continental medalists.  But it wasn’t any of the well-known stars who shinned the brightest under the lights at the Pala Pellicone Arena in the seaside town of Ostia, Italy. Asian Wrestling C’ship: China name 30-strong squad amidst visa uncertainty

Amidst uncertainty over visas, the Chinese Wrestling Federation has named a 30-strong squad for the  Asian Wrestling Championships  to be held in New Delhi. The visa issues have led to uncertainty of the Chinese contingent’s arrival for the  Asian Championships , scheduled to start on February 18 at the KD Jadhav Wrestling Hall at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The problem has occurred as the External Affairs Ministry of India has temporarily suspended the electronic visa facility for the travelers from China in wake of the Coronavirus spread.  The visas granted before the virus hit China too stand cancelled. However, the  Wrestling Federation of India  has taken up the matter with the government to ensure that the visas are granted to all the participants in compliance with the Unite World Championship and the International Olympic Committee directives. India eyeing five golds from New Delhi Asian Wrestling Championships

Wrestling Federation of India is optimistic that the home team will bag up to five gold medals at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2020, to be held in New Delhi from February 18 to 23. Bajrang Punia was the only Indian to bag gold in the last edition of the  Asian Wrestling Championships,  hosted by China. The Wrestling Federation of India is this time hopeful that India will win as many as five gold medals in the tournament in New Delhi. “We have high expectations from Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Anshu Malik, Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Punia to win gold medals in the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships,” WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said at a Press conference in Constitution Club of India, New Delhi on Wednesday. The veteran wrestler is now working hard for the Asian Wrestling Championships 2020, to be held in New Delhi from February 18 to 23. Olympic Bronze medallist  Sakshi Malik  is hopeful of getting another opportunity to contest for a berth for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. “I am hopeful for another round of trials. If I qualify in that I will have two more chances, the Asian World Olympics qualifiers and the World Olympics qualifiers. I want to qualify in the two key tournaments,” Sakshi told WrestlingTV while gearing up for the Asian Wrestling Championship. Asian Wrestling Championships : Under 23 World Champion Goleij to lead Iran team in Delhi

The Iran Wrestling Federation has announced their freestyle squad for the  Asian Wrestling Championships   scheduled to start from 18th February in Delhi.  The Iranian squad will be led by young Mohammadshafie Goleij who won the U23 World Championship gold in Budapest in 97kg category. Iran has selected most of their U23 squad members in the team for the Asian Championship and none of the senior squad member that played the world championship in 2019 in Nur-Sultan has been selected for participation in Delhi.  Other than Goleij, Under 23 World bronze medallist in 57kg AliReza Sarlak is in the squad and will take on India’s Ravi Dhaiya in the category for the gold medal. 2018 Senior World championship bronze winner Pervez Hadi will be making his comeback in Iran team in Delhi. The senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2020 is set to take place in Delhi from February 18-23 at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall.  The United World Wrestling gave hosting rights to the national capital after through inspections and evaluation.  The other city which was in the race is Cuttack (Orissa). This will also be the 8th time India will be hosting the flagship event. The wrestling matches will take place on all the Six days between 10:30 am to 8:30 pm.
